The Spoken Word

Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.

  1. 1972·Boyd K. Packer·Apostle
And now, my young friends, I must tell you soberly and seriously that God has declared in unmistakable language that misery and sorrow will follow the violation of the laws of chastity. “… wickedness never was happiness.” ([Alma 41:10](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1972/04/why-stay-morally-clean?lang=eng/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/41?lang=eng&id=p10#p10).)

First, a return to righteousness. An understanding of who we are and what God expects us to become will prompt us to pray—as individuals and as families. Such a return reveals the constant truth: “Wickedness never was happiness” ( Alma 41:10 ). Let not the evil one dissuade. We can yet be guided by that still small voice—unerring in its direction and all-powerful in its influence.

  3. 1985·Ezra Taft Benson·Apostle
Alma reproved his son Corianton for his immoral behavior. This loving father said that it was no excuse that many others were also guilty. (See Alma 39:4 .) Alma told Corianton frankly that his conduct made it so that some people would not believe Alma’s words. (See Alma 39:11 .) Alma then taught him the principle that “wickedness never was happiness.” ( Alma 41:10 .)

  4. 1991·Dallin H. Oaks·Apostle
Brothers and sisters, old and young, I plead with each of you to remember that wickedness never was happiness and that sin leads to misery. Young people, do not seek happiness in the glittering but shallow things of the world. We cannot achieve lasting happiness by pursuing the wrong things. Someone once said, “You can never get enough of what you don’t need because what you don’t need won’t satisfy you.”

  5. 1993·M. Russell Ballard·Apostle
“We counsel you to choose to live a morally clean life. The prophet Alma declared, ‘Wickedness never was happiness’ ( Alma 41:10 ). Truer words were never spoken!

  6. 1997·Boyd K. Packer·Apostle
The prophet Alma bluntly told his wayward son that because he transgressed he was “in a state contrary to the nature of happiness” and that “wickedness never was happiness.” Those who don’t know how to erase mistakes often feel cornered and rebellious and lose themselves in unworthy living. If you travel with transgressors, you will suffer much more than I did in that restaurant.
