The Spoken Word

Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.

  1. 1853·Orson Pratt·Apostle
Grains and vegetables of every de- l scription that are produced in the same latitudes in the States, grow in the most luxuriant abundance. Young fruit trees seem to be thrifty and doing well : some peaches have been produced for two or three years past. It is one of the best grazing countries in the world; the fine bunch grass will fatten cattle and horses equal to grain : it is seldom that farmers cut much hay, for the cattle can generally find good grazing the year round.

  2. 1881·George Q. Cannon·Apostle
Do not allow the feeling of indifference to come over you. Improve your city, make it attractive, so that when people come into your midst, they will say, "Here is a thrifty, prosperous people; this people are improving their condition, and they are seeking to excel." This is a duty that devolves upon you. The work of improvement connected with this great, growing country which God has given unto us, which he has placed in our hands, so to speak, is our work, and we should have pleasure in improving and beautifying the places of our habitation.

  3. 1976·Marion G. Romney·Apostle
We shall persevere by helping people to help themselves until “the curse of idleness [is] done away with, the evils of a dole abolished, and independence, industry, thrift and self respect [are] once more established amongst our people.”

  4. 1977·Marion G. Romney·Apostle
We do not bless anybody when we do for them what they can do for themselves. The purpose of Welfare Services is to promote “independence, thrift, and self-respect,” and every individual should value his or her independence and labor with all their might to maintain it by being self-sustaining.

  5. 1977·Spencer W. Kimball·Prophet
Use good judgment in acquiring and managing your welfare production project. Be businesslike and frugal, recognizing that we are growing people—both givers and receivers—more than food and merchandise.
Welfare Services: The Gospel in Action — cojc
  6. 1981·Mark E. Petersen·Apostle
We must be industrious, we must be frugal, we must seek a proper balance between our needs and our desires, and especially we must reestablish our lives upon a spiritual foundation.
    Blessings in Self-Reliance — cojc
