The Spoken Word
Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.
1884·Joseph F. Smith·Apostle
This ought not to be the case with us. The Lord says in the scriptures, "make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness." What for? Obviously that you may have power and influence with the unrighteous.
1937·George F. Richards·Apostle
There is an abundance in this world and to spare. The Lord has so said by revelation. Those of us who are fortunate should look to the unfortunate, for that is religion pure and undefiled. We ought to be willing to divide what we have, whether it be much or little, in order to prevent suffering among the children of men. “If ye love me,” said our Savior, “keep my commandments.” ([John 14:15](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1971/10/should-the-commandments-be-rewritten?lang=eng/study/scriptures/nt/john/14?lang=eng&id=p15#p15).)
1973·Marion G. Romney·Apostle
To Joseph the Prophet, Oliver Cowdery, and John Whitmer, the Lord said: “Behold, I say unto you that you shall let your time be devoted to the studying of the scriptures. …” ( D&C 26:1 .)
1983·M. Russell Ballard·Apostle
Teachers would be well advised to study carefully the scriptures and their manuals before reaching out for supplemental materials. Far too many teachers seem to stray from the approved curriculum materials without fully reviewing them. If teachers feel a need to use some good supplemental resources beyond the scriptures and manuals in presenting a lesson, they should first consider the use of the Church magazines.
