The Spoken Word

Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.

  1. 1861·Heber C. Kimball·Apostle
Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.

  2. 1869·George A. Smith·Apostle
Now, I regard this as peculiarly favourable to the Latter-day Saints, because they are possessing what nobody else in the world would have. You know when we lived on the rich fat lands of the Mississippi and Missouri valleys, our fields and improvements were coveted. Our enemies gathered around us and attempted to drive us away, and ultimately succeeded, and they robbed us of our inheritances, which were worth millions of dollars. When we located here we located on a spot that was not likely to be desirable to anybody else, any further than our labor made it so.
Prosperity of Southern Utah — jod
  3. 1971·Mark E. Petersen·Apostle
When the Almighty spoke from Sinai commanding that we should not steal, in the same breath he said: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour,” and he also declared that we must covet nothing that is our neighbor’s. (See [Ex. 20:16–17](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1971/10/honesty-a-principle-of-salvation?lang=eng/study/scriptures/ot/ex/20?lang=eng&id=p16-p17#p16).)

  4. 1974·Howard W. Hunter·Apostle
Again Jesus had turned a question full of venom and envy and technical deceit into an answer of love, compassion, and lofty vision.

  5. 1978·Spencer W. Kimball·Prophet
Bearing false witness and coveting the belongings of others are further evidences of selfishness. “Love thy neighbour as thyself,” Jesus taught. On this and on the love of God “hang all the law and the prophets” ( Matt. 22:39–40 ).
“Hold Fast to the Iron Rod” — cojc
  6. 1987·L. Tom Perry·Apostle
What this testifies to me is that we can tell whether or not we put the kingdom of God first by looking at how we treat our brothers and sisters in the Church. Is there a special bond uniting us? Is there an absence of envy and backbiting? Do we rejoice in the success of a brother or sister as much as in our own? Do we share our substance so that all may be rich like unto us? Ultimately, are we our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers?
